Without a doubt, some of Amelia Island's largest game fish are landed from its two large inlets, the St. Mary's and the Nassau. And for those fishermen that enjoy catching game fish that sometimes weigh over the 200-pound mark and with fairly light fishing tackle, Amelia Island "Big Game" fishing is hard to beat!
The protected waters here are also predictably calm for those fishermen that have a problem with motion sickness. Another big bonus is the short boat ride to the fishing grounds, which is often less than 15-minutes! In fact some of the more productive fishing waters are located right in front of Amelia Island Plantation.
Amelia Island big game fish include tarpon that often weigh over the 100-pound mark, sharks that weigh to 500-pounds, black drum that weigh to 90-pounds, redfish that weigh to 50-pounds, cobia that weigh to 80-pounds and kingfish that weigh to 50-pounds.
All of these species can be found foraging in close to the beaches, bays and inlets of Amelia Island. One of the more successful angling techniques for taking these large game fish, is anchoring the boat and fishing with 30-50 pound big game fishing tackle. A variety of baits are barbed including mullet, menhaden, greenies, whiting and bluefish and drifted behind the boat, or fished right on the bottom.
Live bait trolling produces great action at these close to shore fishing waters during the warmer months for king mackerel, cobia and jack crevalle.
