“Amelia Fishing/Golf Showcased”

By Terry Lacoss

Captain Terry D. Lacoss boarded George Gozdz new Mercury powered Caymas bay boat and were soon navigating to the pristine beaches of Cumberland Island with the camera crew included Taylor Brothers and Spencer Murphy. A steady southwest wind produced calm seas as the fishing party located a massive school of menhaden holding in close to the rolling surf.  A few casts with a monofilament net filled both the Caymas live well and fish box too.

“Where will be fishing today,” George Gozdz asked T.D.?

“We will run some eight-miles offshore the St. Mary’s inlet and live bait fish over a rock ledge where good numbers of king mackerel, cobia, Spanish mackerel and the occasional sail fish have been holding during the past few days,” Captain T.D. Lacoss said.  “It has been exciting fishing action while kingfish up to forty-pounds have been “Sky Rocketing” on live baits.  Just the other day Captain Kenny Crawford guided his fishing charter to a forty-pound king mackerel.  Captain Allen Mills also led his fishing charter to a high leaping sailfish as well!”

After a 45-minute ride in Gozdz’s new Earl Bentz designed Caymas bay boat, the filming crew soon had their cameras focused on a big school of king mackerel which literally exploded on live menhaden free lined deep over the rock ledge.  George also took time to cast a Yozuri plug right into the midst of the action, hooking and landing a pair of kingfish.  Their catch also included a pair of cobia and red snapper that intercepted their live baits as well.

During the heat of the fishing action camera man Tayler Brothers dove into the water and filmed the hot Amelia Island fishing action as well.  Once back on board, a ten-foot shark swam up to the boat and waited patiently to be fed!

“Let’s run back to the inlet,” T.D. Lacoss said.  “The tide is falling which should offer excellent light tackle fishing action for “Bull” redfish”.

Back at the St. Mary’s rock jetties the fishing party was soon casting weighted menhaden close to the jetty rocks where a nice school of reds produced excellent action for the film crew.

On the following day Oak Marsh head golf professional Mike Block accommodated our fishing party to nine holes of golf on the famed back nine of Oak Marsh.

“I haven’t played golf since the last time we filmed Amelia Island fishing,” George Gozdz said.  “Please give me any advice to improving my golf game Terry”!

During our nine holes of golf I witnessed Taylor Brothers hitting 300-yard drives and Spencer Murphy improving his golf game after every stroke!  George Gozdz also showcased a huge improvement in his golf game while slowing down his golf swing and making much better contact with his golf ball.  It had been a long time since I had played the Oak Marsh back nine where three birdies were very encouraging.  I was the teaching golf pro there from 1973-1978, however fishing interrupted my golf game!

Many fishing stories were also shared of baby tarpon, snook, redfish and largemouth bass that are plentiful in the many Omni Amelia Island Resort lagoons and lakes that are located on the property and along the golf courses.

You may see all of Captain George Gozdz’s “Unfathomed” TV fishing shows on “Sportsman’s Channel” then in September the fishing show will air on the “World Fishing Network”.  You may also see these popular fishing shows by going to https://youtu.be/9FfhurZXbOZA.
